Dear Berlin Festival crowd, thanks for making this year’s festival the special event it was!

Over 20,000 enthusiastic festivalgoers celebrated the eighth edition of the Berlin Festival. At the former Tempelhof Airport, not only acclaimed acts like The Killers, Sigur Rós, Paul Kalkbrenner, Franz Ferdinand, Tocotronic and Kraftklub lured the crowd but newcomers like Sizarr, iamamiwhoami or Mostly Robot provided for a thrilling atmosphere as well. Once the last headliner had left the stage at Tempelhof, festivalgoers swarmed to the sold out Club Xberg to party with acts like Metronomy, Hercules & Love Affair Soundsystem, Crookers and Kid Simius playing bass-laden tunes until the wee hours.

The new stage setup as well as brand-new fringe events like the Berlin Debate, an extended Art Village and the Bolzen Soccer Court (a co-operation with the the ex-national player Michael Rummenigge’s Trendsport company) were a nice change to the stage programme. Also, the Art Prize was, once again, awarded at the Art Village: Jim Avignon and DAG, who worked together for the first time after a ten-year hiatus, won first prize. “It’s my first art prize ever,” Jim Avignon commented. Il-Jin Choi a.k.a. Atem came in second with his Schreibgas (gas writing) performance. 44Flavours and Clemens Behr won third prize for their sculpture installation. A special award was given to the performance group “QITC – Quiet In The Corner” comprised of the dancers Nuria Höyng, Franka Marlene Foth, Laura Bächer and Katariina Tuomiluoma.

The organisers sum up: “The idea of an urban festival really came to life. We are very much looking forward to 2013.”
