Art Village

Berlin’s urban art scene finds its equivalent in Berlin Festival’s Art Village. 20+ invited artists of various genres will present unique urban and fine art. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, 50 “pieces of the Wall” will be individually designed, sprayed and plastered by such artists as Poet, Nomad, 44Flavours and others. Post-apocalyptic performances will be staged (Crystal Mafia), smashing sculptures will be made with chainsaws (Maike Gräf), and robots will be built (Stohead) on location. An art bazaar, installations, photo exhibitions and food stands add to the extravagant and unique atmosphere at our Art Village. About 600 galleries and 8,000 artists living and working in Berlin will be represented at Berlin Festival 2011 with tangible art for everyone to enjoy. Curator Jan “Yaneq” Kage (Party Arty, Radio Arty on 100.6 Flux FM, Galerie Schau Fenster), one of the scene’s leading figures, will introduce all Berlin artists – Berlin Festival’s Art Village presenting Berlin’s young and vibrant urban art scene at Tempelhof Airport.

44flavours

44flavours is an art collective based in Kreuzberg – Berlin, consisting of Sebastian Bagge and Julio Rölle.Their work showcases a high level of knowledge of the diverse fields of art, by incorporating and rearranging them to bring their own visions to life. Growing up with graffiti and the derivative sample and remix culture of hip-hop, both artists developed their individual styles without the implicit limits of any specific medium – instead they exploited multiple media to support and best express their ideas and tastes at the moment of creation. 44flavours is not only synonymous with the strangely beautiful exhibitions, which frequently sprout up all over Europe, but also with a cutting edge Design Studio, which focuses on a very broad scope of graphic design, illustration and typography. 44flavours is still evolving in an environment of unlimited freedom and creativity. Their studio activity is dedicated to pushing skill, craft and conceptual knowledge to their ever widening limits.

Crystal Mafia

The project began in San Francisco with Kieran Behan and Ashley Hayward joining forces having a burning desire to push the boundaries of decadent art. So they created the Crystal Mafia photobooth, which has grown over the past years to incorporate many avenues of creation. They have collected many talented female artists to encompass everything from performance art to set design and original costume production.

CZARNOBYL

CZARNOBYL was born in 1974 in Poland. Since 1993 he has been living in Berlin. In 1980’ he started to create stencils in order to communicate his feelings and ideas. He was criticizing the social system and wanted to draw attention of average people on Streetart by making grey and creepy city buildings more colorful. In Berlin he developed his style and started to experiment with his art by creating new artistic forms from parts of old stencils. His current works are based mostly on variety of colors and shadows, which makes an impression of a photography. He works with canvas, metal, wood, plastic, glass and last but not least on the walls.

DAG

The avant-garde – in its various permutations – is always present. Malevich’s elementary shapes, 20th century Constructivist tendencies, geometric arrangements from Bauhaus to Op Art, the grids and serial aesthetics of the industrial and computer age – all of this finds its way into DAG’s paintings. Art in an age of unlimited reproducibility, its signature seemingly erased. At first glance, some pictures appear to have been generated by digital means. However, DAG pursues a very different path. While he does pick up on the issue of repetition and reproduction, he does not actually do it himself. What might look technical isn’t so. DAG’s pictures seem perfect, but perfection remains an illusion. Most of all, however, DAG’s images reveal: there is plenty of life in Modernity yet.

KLUB7

The German, Berlin and Halle (Saale) based artist and design collective KLUB7 is creating murals, customizations and illustrations since over a decade throughout the world. Together they developed a collective trademark style that combines the diverse backgrounds of the six members; graphically abstracting urban art, Pop Art, Comic and other elements of pop culture on paper, wood, fabric and walls. KLUB7, above all, is an artistic laboratory, wherein everything revolves around doing and experimenting.

– Sebastian C. Strenger, M.A., Deutscher Kurator

Pisa73

To@ster by Gobsquad

Large scale images of famous or infamous people are rendered using 1000 slices of rare, medium and burnt toast – each piece a pixel in a mosaic. As the picture emerges, and the air fills with smoke, the performers chat to their audience and ask them to lend a hand.

Stohead

After a career as a classic writer Stohead in the south of Germany moved to various cities with a longer stay in Hamburg. 1999 he joined the artist group “getting-up”. At that time he started his studio work. His passion for weird characters shows off in sculptures which followed his early figurative studio works. The puristic form of graffiti, tagging and throw ups is a form of contemporary calligraphy for Stohead. His latest works are martial typographic textpatterns of lyrics by rap actors and punkrock bands he grew up with. Since 2006 Stohead lives and works in Berlin.

Sean Rooney

Canadian wunderkind/enfant terrible of the balloon world,
Sean Rooney dedicated a large portion of his so-called adult life to making art with balloons.
Part trailblazing conceptualist, part extreme technician, he has found ways to make magic, music, fashion, sculpture, puppets, sound effects, comical visual narratives, complex scientific explanations, etc… using balloons as his sole visible prop.
Apparently, inspiration is the other key element!
His performances are fun, funny, and tuned to each particular audience; great for children of all ages!

The Golden Discoschorle Warenbeweger

The Golden Discoschorle Warnebeweger will, once again, roam the airfield at Berlin Festival as the smallest mini bar in the city – an artistic outpost or a rolling jackass where people can raise their glasses!

The Berliners

Year 11 after the Berlin Wall came down: E-Werk has closed its doors already 3 years ago and the Love Parade is rapidly becoming a commercial spectacle. The illegal bars of the 90ies, that have dominated the city´s nightlife everywhere in Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, slowly disappear from the scene. But it opens up new ways to celebrate parties in the capital: clubs and bars that are now called “charitable organization”, get temporary leases in the most interesting underground venues and establish, what today attracts hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world: the world’s top spot for nightlife culture. THE BERLINERS documents this time from the perspective of the Different artists, shows the people who have participated and celebrated, and tells the stories that have happened.

Metal Stage, act 1

In this theatrical installation, the viewer is seduced to slip into a hyper real performance show in which one takes on the lead singers role. Pre-composed harsh sound textures of digital glitch and distorted noise are fused and layered with the natural voice of the viewer and played out at very high volume to release an almost visceral power.
